Spring is fully upon us and we have finally entered the month of April. If you weren’t aware April 22nd is Earth Day and here at Posh Upscale Resale we are determined to spread awareness of this important day and a sustainable lifestyle!
Did You Know?
Consumers throw away shoes and clothing, at an average of 70 lbs per person per year. Instead of recycling the old clothing, these pieces unfortunately end up in landfills. Up to 95% of the textiles that end up in landfills each year could have been recycled or reused.
What Can You Do?
As a consumer where you spend your money can make a huge impact on the environmental crisis that we are experiencing. One thing that anyone can do is make an effort to shop at consignment and thrift stores. Buying used clothes and accessories is one of the only environmentally-friendly ways to shop for clothes. Consignment stores carry gently-used clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories. Items sold at consignment stores are usually on the higher-end of fashion brands and keep up with the latest trends. You will find unique items and timeless pieces that will never go out of style. We love mixing vintage pieces with current trends and many of the higher-end handbags are investment pieces that will only increase in price the longer they are around.
R³ (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse)
Throughout April – and year round – Posh Upscale Resale is challenging folks to: Reduce and clean-out closets of gently-loved items (thus reducing the impact on landfills). Recycle clothing, handbags and other accessories for a “greener future” – environmentally and monetarily, and bring those items to Posh Upscale Resale, allowing others an opportunity to Reuse previously loved items at an affordable price! Posh Upscale Resale also takes this challenge and the Reduce principle one step further by only accepting and offering authentic items; hence combatting (reducing) the counterfeit trade.
Green Sheen And Green-Washing
Nowadays many companies want to jump on the bandwagon of green practices to gain a bigger customer base, but many of those same companies are not actually following through with what they are claiming to be doing when it comes to being more environmentally friendly. This false narrative is called green sheen and when a company misleads their consumers this is called green-washing. As a consumer it is important to do your research on a company and how they are either helping or affecting the environment. When you shop at a consignment store you have the peace of mind knowing that this is an environmentally friendly option every time you make a purchase. You are automatically making a positive choice and even benefiting your local community.
Supporting Your Local Community
Many consignment shops are locally owned and here at Posh Upscale Resale when you shop at our store you are not only supporting a small business, but you are also supporting a women owned business. Today in a world of fast-fashion options and wasteful fashion practices, you have the choice to invest in local retail businesses, help your local economy and strengthen community relationships. Local business owners care about their customers, usually have a smaller carbon-footprint (compared to bigger non-local companies), and help to supply jobs for many of your friends and neighbors. Where you shop does matter if living a sustainable lifestyle is important to you.
